Submission three

SUBMISSION THREE

The final submission for arch1201 I was pleased to learn the brief gives the choice of three sites in Newtown. A busy suburb i often visit at night as it is not far from where i live - alive with busy restaurants and nightlife. Not far from Sydney Uni and UTS the area is largely populated by students and younger people. A grungy alternative feel dominates - busy footpaths and busy narrow streets are lined by narrow blocks that neatly house rows of Victorian terraces.

Of the three sites one stood out to me immediately. Site one is currently FRANKLINS. a long slender block with the facade at King Street and rear access by a car park. Parking is scarce on King street especially at night as the clear-ways are only during peak periods on the road.

__The Building__
Acting as a thoroughfare through to the parking at the rear, the Facade is to be retained to keep the period character that i find defines the architecture in the area. The gallery is at the front to attract attention from the street. Looking through the window from the street which is covered with a broad lattice of shelving which will house a series of photographs and small decorative objects that have been picked by the artist. once inside, during the day the gallery is filled with soft light which is reflected through a series of overhead adjustable louvers - customizable presentation shelving sits either scattered or neatly arranged depending on the current offerings/events which are to house a number of supporting artists works. Cable mounted photo boards around the walls.

A rustic timber stairway to a platform on level one awkwardly juts out obstructing the space a little but creating a more homely than commercial feeling.

After the gallery, the courtyard is surrounded by a series of predominantly glass bi folding doors housing a courtyard that is bare other than a large projection screen on its one brick wall and a single sculpture in the center.

The next space is a small kitchen and bar, a bathroom and a store room. At the back of the building access to the car park at the rear.

The first floor is comprised initially by a walkway that takes you past the courtyard on a ledge. While passing the courtyard the visitor must pass in-front of a projection intercepting the light and becoming once more a part of the photo's on show. An intensional addition as the artist truly wishes to have the people visiting the gallery to be part of the artwork(s).

A cyclorama studio is the space that follows. This area can be used for any other photographic work that might be carried out such as product photography or other types of portraiture.
Behind this space a small apartment where the artist resides of an evening, and a secondary studio which is used for retouching and as a secure store room as the building is generally a largely public space.

__Materiality__
dominated by

- Stressed Brick - Recycled Timber -

An appropriate choice i feel in order to drive attention to the work on display and give the building a worn grungy feeling.

__The Artist__
She is a successful
photographer in her mid twenties. She thrives on having people enjoy her exhibitions because they are so interactive. - including the people who visit the space in the photographs in a range of different styles of photography. The space also acts as a place for her to edit and manipulate the images. She is buried in her craft constantly trying to reinvent and create photographic techniques but mainly focusing on making portraiture a very social event. She also lives on site and uses the space in similar ways to how it is used of an evening when people come to visit in some instances merely as a trendy haunt to go for a drink

HAVE A LOOK AT THIS IF YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW TO MAKE A PROJECTOR IN SKETCHUP.

POSTER_ONE

POSTER TWO

Raw render from top of walkway looking down to gallery. Photographs mounted on adjustable cable guides.

Finished B&W Section

Raw section- rendered with Maxwell out of Google Sketchup.

Raw plan - One single light placed at the front in an attempt to show the open plan nature of the entire building.
After boosting levels and implementing grey-scale filter the light becomes much more crisp.
Rendered with Vray out of 3d Studio Max - this Image displays a night scene with the studio in use.

Louvres for the front of the Studio. B&W simply for consistency with the other renders on the poster.
This is the Raw render of the Louvres done in Quicksilver in 3ds 2011.
A beautiful Repeat texture from CGTEXTURES. This makes up the stressed brick walls throughout.
The original render of the projector on level one.

Cadastral view of model.

Facade of model. I wanted to retain the current Brickwork to remain in line with the existing streetscape.
Shot of the gallery displaying bi-fold doors.
Once the shade cloth is removed the courtyard becomes more obvious.

Untouched facade

Finished render - View from courtyard back to kitchenette on ground floor/Studio level one.

Finished render of the studio
